Andrea Summey, LMSW
Licensed Masters Social Worker
Andrea Summey obtained both her Bachelors and Masters in Social Work from the University of Kansas, with a special focus on Human Sexuality/the LGBTQ+ community, and received her LMSW in 2019. She graduated with experience working with community resources through interning at the local food pantry,
as well as experience doing school social work for the Lawrence public school district in the elementary and middle school age ranges. Prior to joining FPS, Andrea was contracted as a Sex Offender Therapist/Behavioral Health Professional at the state juvenile prison.
Andrea has experience working in a therapeutic setting with a diverse range of individuals, from children to young adults, who struggle with concerns related to gender and sexuality identity, anxiety, depression, ADHD, negative self-image, behavioral disorders, and trauma recovery. Additionally as a member of the FPS staff, she will be taking further training on working with individuals struggling with disordered eating.
In sessions, Andrea practices culturally grounded social work from a strengths perspective while also utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Social Identity Theory, Narrative Theory, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Andrea is always trying new ways of keeping clients as engaged as possible during those difficult conversations by maintaining a style of therapy that is relatable, creative, and fun.
Andrea believes a successful therapeutic relationship starts with a supportive open mind, which facilitates a comfortable judgment free safe space to meet the client where they are at, both emotionally and behaviorally. With all of her clients, and especially those who are younger, Andrea is committed to helping individuals obtain mood management and develop social/emotional skills to improve their everyday lives and interactions with others.
From Dr. Wes: Andrea is a great addition to our staff. There are very few therapists with meaningful experience working with teen boys and Andrea comes to us with considerable experience seeing a very difficult population in that demographic. Her desire to work with children and teens is a great asset in a community with diminishing resources for kids and one of the main reasons we saw her as a terrific candidate for this position. Her interest and experience with young people in the queer community is always welcome at an office that has many years of experience in that area of practice. We're excited Andrea has joined our growing team and we know she'll fill up quickly. If you'd like to schedule an intake with her while she still has availability, please complete the Ask About Services form.
Andrea's begins January 17th. Her schedule will be posted here closer to that date.
