Formal Testing and Assessment to Guide Clinical and Academic Decision Making

Family Psychological Services is the leading provider of testing and diagnostic assessment in Douglas County. Our team includes two master’s-level psychologists dedicated to meeting the community’s growing needs. We offer a range of assessments for ADHD, autism, cognitive abilities, personality, depression, and anxiety. Each evaluation is designed to clarify diagnoses and enhance treatment planning.

  • FEES AND PROCEDURES FOR TESTING
  • Each evaluation is individualized and may take 3 to 5 sessions, with sessions typically lasting about 90 minutes each. The process may include in-session assessments, outside measures, a clinical interview, and if needed, an interview with collateral contacts you release to talk with the test-giver. A final review session will be scheduled a few weeks after all testing is completed.
  • The estimated total cost of an evaluation ranges from $1,500 to $2,800, with an average of about $1,800. Actual out-of-pocket expenses depend on your insurance coverage.
  • A $500 deposit is required before services are rendered. This deposit will either be applied toward the balance or refunded as insurance payments are received.

INSURANCE CHECK FOR TESTING (if your child is on KanCare, you can ignore this):

Insurance coverage for psychological testing varies dramatically. The only way for you to assure how much of your services will be covered by insurance is for you to call the company on the number provided on your card and ask the following questions about testing services. If you want to ask instead about psychotherapy, click here for the list of questions on that page. Here are the testing questions to ask your insurance carrier:

  • Will you cover CPT codes 96130, 96131, 96136, and 96137?
  • Does any of the cost of these services go to my deductible before anything will be paid? If so, how much is left on my deductible, and when does it turn over?
  • You do NOT need to ask about specific providers at our office. We have that part figured out.

Customer service representatives (CSRs) vary dramatically even in the same office and with the same insurance carrier. Even when you go into the call with our specific question set, you may be given inaccurate information. Some CSRs will claim they can’t answer any of these questions without a diagnosis. This is not true. Clients call other CSRs ever day without any problem. If this happens, suggest to them the diagnosis you suspect best fits you (e.g., major depression, generalized anxiety, ADHD). This will not go on your record or matter in any way down the road. It is simply to get them through this unnecessary step of the process.

Five Session ADHD Evaluation For Adults

Consistent with research suggesting that ADHD is not “overdiagnosed,” clients seeking and ADHD treatment will undergo a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, and if indicated, will receive both therapy and medication management to support the best possible outcomes. For adults who only require an assessment to share with their primary care provider or another clinician, we offer a dedicated Five Session ADHD Assessment Protocol that goes well beyond other assessments available in the area. Several of our clinicians routinely conduct these popular assessments. We do not offer a shorter form assessment.

The process begins with a 90-minute intake session to collect detailed information regarding previous school experiences, work life, relationships, and other factors that can influence or be affected by ADHD. In the second session, we review the results of the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS), which is completed online by the client and, when possible, by others close to them. The CAARS is a norm-referenced, gold-standard tool for evaluating how ADHD symptoms impact daily life and functioning. If the assessment supports an ADHD diagnosis, clients are referred to one of our APRNs for a trial of medication.

After starting medication, clients meet three more times with the therapist evaluator to review the medication’s effects, identify challenging situations, and develop coping strategies to reduce the impact of ADHD symptoms in daily life. The therapist evaluator may recommend ongoing care based on the summary of the five sessions, but the final decision is always with the client.

Most clients find this process so beneficial that they choose to continue receiving medication and therapy through our clinic. Alternatively, clients may request a letter to their primary care physician and pursue further medication management elsewhere. Students find the evaluation helpful in attaining accommodations in college and trade school and for advanced testing like the GRE.

By allowing time to thoroughly understand each individual and their unique circumstances, this approach increases the likelihood of reaching an accurate and helpful diagnosis. When ADHD is present, treatment can be a transformative next step; when it is not, avoiding unnecessary interventions saves time, money, and effort. This model aims to balance robust answers within a concise time frame.
